10,800 Laps for Shelter Pets: Charlotte’s Biggest Community Walk Returns to Pearl Street Park

Charlotte residents are coming together at Pearl Street Park to help raise $54,000 for shelter pets through a citywide charity walk supporting Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control.

Charlotte, if you’ve been looking for a reason to get outside and support a great local cause, this is it.

On Saturday, May 30, 2026, the community is heading to Pearl Street Park for the annual Steps for Shelter Pets charity walk benefiting Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control.

The mission is simple but powerful: complete 10,800 laps to represent the 10,800 animals that entered the shelter last year.

The event also aims to raise $54,000 for the AC&C Second Chance Fund, which helps provide medical treatment, surgeries, enrichment toys, bedding, and extra care for shelter pets waiting for adoption.

Why 10,800 Laps Matters

Animal shelters across North Carolina, including here in Charlotte, continue to face serious overcrowding challenges.

That’s what makes this number so meaningful. Every lap walked represents one animal that entered the CMACC shelter last year. That means every step is a small act of support for the dogs, cats, staff, volunteers, fosters, and adopters working to give these animals a second chance.

The money raised will support the AC&C Second Chance Fund, which helps cover medical needs and quality-of-life support that can make a major difference for shelter pets.

That includes specialized surgeries, treatment for injuries, enrichment toys, puzzle feeders, soft bedding, and other support that helps animals stay healthier and less stressed while they wait for a forever home.

A Spotlight on Pearl Street Park

Pearl Street Park is more than just a convenient place for a walk. Located at 1200 Baxter Street, near Midtown and the historic Brooklyn neighborhood, the park has deep Charlotte history.

Established in 1943, Pearl Street Park was Charlotte’s first public park built specifically for Black residents. It served as an important gathering place for the Brooklyn community, which was once the city’s largest Black neighborhood.

Today, after a major renovation, the park features an inclusive playground, lighted multi-use fields, paved trails, and the “Brooklyn Stories” sculpture by Cliff Garten.

It’s a meaningful backdrop for a community event built around care, connection, and showing up for those who need help.

How to Get Involved

You don’t need to be a runner or athlete to participate. This is a community walk, and every lap helps.

1. Sign up early: Register through the City of Charlotte’s event page so organizers can plan for attendance.

2. Start a fundraiser: Create a personal fundraising page and ask friends, coworkers, neighbors, or family members to sponsor your laps.

3. Show up and walk: Even if you only complete one lap, your steps still count toward the community goal.

4. Bring your dog: Friendly, well-behaved dogs are welcome. Just make sure they are on a fixed leash and comfortable around people and other pets.

Pro Tips for the Walk

Charlotte in late May can get warm, so a little planning will make the day easier.

Bring water: Water stations may be available, but it’s smart to bring your own reusable bottle.

Wear sunscreen: Much of the walking route may be sunny, so bring SPF, sunglasses, or a hat.

Pack dog supplies: Bring extra poop bags, a portable water bowl, and anything your pup may need.

Arrive early: Give yourself time to park, check in, and get comfortable before the walk begins.

Check the numbers: You can view current CMACC shelter statistics to better understand the need behind the event.

Beyond the Walk: Supporting CMACC

The Steps for Shelter Pets event is a major opportunity to help, but the need continues long after the walk ends.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control is always looking for people willing to foster, adopt, volunteer, and donate.

Fostering can be especially impactful. Even taking a dog or cat home for a short period can open up space at the shelter and give that animal a much-needed break from the kennel environment.

If you’re not ready to foster or adopt, volunteering and donating are still meaningful ways to support the shelter’s work.

Post-Walk Bites in Midtown

After the walk, Pearl Street Park puts you close to plenty of Midtown options.

The Metropolitan is nearby, Little Sugar Creek Greenway is just around the corner, and several surrounding patios are pet-friendly if you’re bringing your dog along for the day.

It’s a great way to turn the event into a full Saturday: walk for a cause, enjoy the park, support the shelter, and grab a bite nearby afterward.

Final Thoughts

The Steps for Shelter Pets walk is more than a Saturday event. It’s a reminder that Charlotte can make a real difference when the community shows up together.

10,800 laps may sound like a lot, but with enough walkers, families, volunteers, and pups on the trail, it’s a goal Charlotte can absolutely reach.

Quick Recap:

  • Goal: 10,800 laps and $54,000 raised
  • Date: Saturday, May 30, 2026
  • Time: 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM
