More than 200 volunteers gathered in Uptown Charlotte with a simple goal: turn a few hours of service into thousands of essentials for neighbors who need them.

Volunteers from Duke Energy and other organizations assembled 10,000 hygiene kits containing basic necessities for people experiencing housing instability in the Charlotte area.

The effort addresses a need that can easily be overlooked. For people without stable housing, everyday products like soap, toothpaste and other personal-care items are not always easy to access.

According to WCCB Charlotte, the kits will be split between two local organizations serving people in need. 5,000 kits will go to Crisis Assistance Ministry, while another 5,000 will go to Roof Above.

The effort did not stop there. Organizers are also distributing 800 inclement-weather kits to seniors served through Meals on Wheels, extending the project's reach to another vulnerable part of the community.
