Spark Centro: A New Hub Empowering Latino Entrepreneurs in Charlotte |
Transforming Albemarle Road into a Thriving Business Corridor |
Charlotte's east side is set to welcome Spark Centro, a dynamic business hub designed to empower Latino entrepreneurs and stimulate economic growth along the Albemarle Road corridor.
Located at 8805 E. WT Harris Blvd, the nearly 9-acre site will feature a 34,000-square-foot facility serving as the headquarters for Spark Centro. The project includes plans for additional developments, such as retail spaces and a potential conference and retreat center, aiming to make the site a destination for residents and employees across Mecklenburg County.
In December 2024, Bank of America contributed $1 million to support Spark Centro's mission of providing jobs, workforce development, entrepreneurship training, and community networking opportunities. This funding complements previous investments from the city and county, each pledging $1.5 million, and a $1.5 million contribution from the Leon Levine Foundation.
Manuel Rey, the newly appointed President and CEO of Spark Centro, emphasized the center's inclusive mission: "This plan started with the Latin community, but we have evolved into a more inclusive practice, the corridor of opportunity for everybody."
Charlotte's Latino population has been rapidly growing, with approximately 8,000 Latino-owned businesses operating in the city. Spark Centro aims to support this vibrant community by offering resources such as coaching, workshops, and space for other nonprofits focused on workforce development.
The facility is expected to open in 2026, with construction planned to begin in 2025. The project represents a public-private partnership involving the city, county, private donors, and the Latin American Chamber of Commerce of Charlotte, all working together to strengthen economic opportunity in the area.
As the Albemarle Road corridor continues to develop, Spark Centro stands as a beacon of opportunity, fostering entrepreneurship and economic mobility for Charlotte's diverse communities.
